We all love K-Cup® pods because they deliver a great cup of brew in less than a minute. But how do they keep Keurig® coffee fresh, every time? We make the science behind our pods’ freshness as simple and smooth as your favourite mug of brew.
What makes K-Cup® pods coffee fresh?
Every time you use your Keurig® coffee maker, the ritual –and results– are the same: Place your mug on the drip tray, insert your favourite K-Cup® pod, push ‘BREW’ and in under a minute enjoy fresh coffee. Yum. But how do we keep Keurig® coffee so fresh, you ask?
Even for lovers of brew, it can be hard to describe what makes coffee fresh. It’s a matter of flavour, aroma and quality. The science behind this is pretty complicated, but we’re experts at making things simple.
When coffee grounds are exposed to air, they become stale. During roasting, the beans collect carbon dioxide, which helps preserve the taste, aroma and quality they get from the fire. This forms the signature flavour you savour, like in the Van Houtte® Original House Blend.
Exposure to oxygen degrades the coffee’s natural oils and aromatic components, making it less fresh. This can be worsened by moisture, high temperatures and light. Fortunately, K-Cup® pods are designed to protect against all these factors to keep Keurig® coffee fresh – always.
The perfect fresh cup of Keurig® coffee
Each Keurig® K-Cup® pod begins with a single portion of gourmet-quality beans, measured and ground per the roaster’s specifications. Then, we give them the perfect seal for your approval – air-tight to preserve freshness and flavour. Every pod is nitrogen-flushed and designed to protect the coffee grounds inside against oxygen, moisture and light.
Sustainability and freshness are important to us. Not only are your K-Cup® pods packaged fresh, we also decided to make our new recyclable K-Cup® pods with plastic #5. This material can easily be given a second life and is strong enough to withstand the heat and pressure of a Keurig® coffee maker’s brewing process and protect the grounds against oxygen, moisture and light beforehand. Simply put, you can continue to enjoy the same high-quality, great tasting fresh coffee you know and love like Timothy’s® French Vanilla and Lavazza® Classico Coffee, while feeling good knowing your pod will get recycled.
Not sure if your K-Cup® pod is still its freshest? Before putting it into your Keurig® coffee maker, check the Best Before Date on the side. This date is recommended by the roaster and is not an expiration date – more a guide to optimal freshness.
Fresh storage ideas for your Keurig® coffee
While coffee corner décor is a matter of personal expression, there are certain things to remember to keep your Keurig® coffee fresh. Most importantly, we suggest storing your K-Cup® pods in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
It might seem intuitive to keep them in the fridge or freezer for freshness, but we would recommend against it. The reason why is simple: Your K-Cup® pods will absorb the aromas from the fridge, affecting their flavour. Besides, we’ve brewed up great Keurig® storage options that are sure to be your taste!
